Department of Zoology started offering Major course from the year 1994. The Department has got a very experienced team of dedicated faculty members with varied specialization in Zoology. Adequate laboratory facilities have been created by the department as per the requirement of Gauhati University syllabus. The department of Zoology has upgraded its laboratory and research facility by funds provided by Department of Science and Technology Govt. of India.

Departmental Facilities
Department has well equipped Laboratory cum classroom and a Museum. There are a total of three Laboratories that has sophisticated instruments and required chemicals to carry out the practical. The Museum has different bottle and slide specimens of both non chordates and chordates species. All these laboratory and museum aids to all HS, Degree Major, Generic and General Course students. Departmental Activities
Two minor research projct with Co-ordinator Dr. Sandeep Das and funded by UGC have been completed in the last two years
A national seminar cum workshop & training was organized by Dept. of Zoology in 2012 in collaboration with department of Geography from 23rd April to 25th April 2012 on “Application of Remote sensing and GIS in Natural Resource managementâ€
To enhance the students’ interest and knowledge, Zoology department is organizing educational excursion regularly to different advance research laboratory and national parks outside the state and also within the state. Prominent among them are Corbet national Park-Uttarakhand, Periyar National park- Kerala, NANDAN KANAN- Bhubeneswar, Manas National Park- Assam, Kerela Forest research Institute- Thrissur , Kerela, Guindy National Park- Chennai etc.
Regular Seminar, Group discussion are held in the Department.
Seminar library having more than 300 books provided ample scope for students of zoology department, to upgrate their knowledge in the recent advances in the filed of Zoology.
With the introduction of semester system, some advance practical particularly in the field of molecular Biology like DNA, RNA & protein Isolation are required to be done for which some advance instruments like cooling centrifuze, Trinocular electronic Reserch Microscope, Colorimeter, High Precision digital centrifuze, PH meter along with water and soil analysis kit there in the department, which will be of great use in pursuing Research work and allotting project work to the final semester students.
Students of the Zoology department are also encouraged to participate in some workshop & training programme organized by different organization. Recently 2013 as many as 10 (ten) students of Zoology (Major) have attended the two day workshop- cum-training programme on “Post harvest method of Mushroom Cultivation” organized by Department of Biotechnology under Bodoland University- Kokrakjhar
Few students of the department are also the active members of wild life conservation NGO. Like- “nature’s Beckon” and attending the survey camp organized by the NGO from the time to time.
