Department Of History

The Department of History had its inception since the establishment of the college itself in the year 1959. The department offered its first course in the level of intermediate Arts (I.A) for dayshift and nightshift. In 1961 Pre University (P.U) course was started and in 1962 first batch P.U students appeared in the final examination. In 1961 three year degree course (general) was introduced in History.

In 1967, however, Honours course was introduced in History for the session of 1967-68. Late Biseswar Chakraborty was appointed as its first Lecturer and head of the department on 01-09-1959. Prof Chakraborty worked single handedly having no other academic staff till 1962. Later Late Guruprasad Dutta joined as Lecturer. From 1965-66 two more teachers namely Late Mukul Ch. Brahma and Late Hiren Ch. Das were added to the staff and in 1990 one more teacher name Dr. Sekhar Brahma joined to the staff. Later Sekhar Brahma Resigned from the departmental Teaching post and joined as the Joint Registrar under Gauhati University Kokrajhar Campus in the Year 31-12-2000.

At present the department has 5 existing professors.

The basic objectives of the department is to impart quality education on the courses provided and offered by the College to achieve the above mission mentioned. The History department of the college is making an effort to improve the department. It has introduced class seminar in majors/Honours course in order to improve the competence of the student and through the home assignment students are made capable to challenge their examination. The study of a History is as important as other subjects and discipline. Different departmental seminars, discussion, field survey, projects, field study, excavation, archaeological survey to the historical sites are being arranged and organized by the department.

The Department also has an alumni association amongst the students in order to connect the outgoing students and the existing students in the department. Under this “THE KOKRAJHAR GOVT. COLLEGE HISTORY CONGRESS” is also been established to keep close rapport between students and the teachers in the family of History department. The department has a long way and it is expected that there will be remarkable professional and a good academic growth in the years to come.
